How Our Strategic Partnership with NOGAMU Is Fueling Kebera Organics’ Efforts

When Kebera Organics first set out to transform Ugandan farming, it knew that science and innovation would only get it so far. Real change needed a partner rooted deeply in the organic values and structures of the country. Enter the National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU), an alliance that has become central to Kebera’s mission.

A Meeting of Minds and Mission

NOGAMU, founded in 2001, has long stood as Uganda’s premier umbrella organization for organic agriculture. It brings together farmers, processors, exporters, NGOs, and other stakeholders under a single, unified vision: to promote certified organic production, strengthen market linkages, and elevate smallholder livelihoods.

For Kebera Organics, the decision to partner with NOGAMU was more than strategic - it felt inevitable. Both organizations share a deep-rooted belief in sustainable farming as a force for social change. As we explored how to scale their contamination‑testing technology and traceability tools, we realized that real impact would come only when combined with NOGAMU’s capacity-building programs, policy reach, and farmer networks.

Building Capacity Through the NOGAMU Academy

One of the most powerful engines of this collaboration has been the NOGAMU Organic Academy. The Academy offers practical, expert-led training in organic practices, certification, and agribusiness development.

Kebera Organics supports this work both technically and programmatically: its devices and traceability systems align perfectly with the Academy’s training on quality standards, and its data-driven model helps Academy graduates meet the documentation requirements for certification.

This training isn’t limited to farmers. Through the Academy, youth, women agripreneurs, and even researchers gain access to tools and networks that help them professionalize their organic production and transform subsistence farms into export-ready businesses.

Strengthening Market Access

NOGAMU’s strength lies not only in training but in market facilitation; it has cultivated national and international buyers, and plays a key role in connecting Ugandan producers to high-value organic markets.

Kebera’s innovative traceability system, which can tie each product back to individual farms and batches, has given these market linkages a critical boost. By offering data-backed proof of origin and quality, Kebera helps smallholder farmers meet the demands of increasingly strict export buyers. Together with NOGAMU, we are making Ugandan organic produce more competitive on the global stage.

Advocacy, Research & Policy Impact

Beyond business, the partnership has a policy dimension. NOGAMU has been instrumental in the development and launch of Uganda’s National Organic Agriculture Policy, working alongside government and civil‑society actors. Kebera Organics, on its side, contributes research and innovation that supports the policy’s goals - safer, more transparent organic value chains; lower costs of certification; and greater inclusion of smallholder farmers.

On the research front, the two organizations also collaborate to pilot new tools and methods: from soil-health monitoring to contamination detection, they jointly pilot interventions that could define the future of organic farming in Uganda.

Real Impact, Real People

The numbers tell a powerful story. According to NOGAMU, its programs now serve over 210,000 certified organic producers, across multiple value chains including coffee, sesame, and vanilla. These are not just abstractions; they are farmers whose incomes have grown, agripreneurs with formalized organic businesses, and communities that are benefiting from sustainable, health-focused agriculture.

One Academy graduate, Sarah Namatovu, now runs an organic pineapple juice brand that sells in Ugandan supermarkets - a business born from training, certification, and support.

What Comes Next: Scaling the Partnership

Kebera Organics and NOGAMU have laid out an ambitious roadmap:

  • Wider deployment of traceability and testing tools, allowing more farmers to certify and reach export markets.
  • Expanded training programs, especially in underserved rural areas, through the NOGAMU Academy.
  • Joint policy and advocacy work, pushing for greater access to certification and more supportive organic regulation.
  • Research collaboration, including longer-term studies on soil health, contamination, and organic inputs.

Why This Partnership Matters

In a sector where farmers often lack the resources to meet global organic standards, this partbnership brings together innovation (Kebera’s tech) and deep, institution-level capacity (NOGAMU’s network). More than that, it embodies a shared mission: economic empowerment through agriculture that protects people and the planet.

For Kebera Organics, NOGAMU isn’t just a partner. It’s a vital pillar of its vision - transforming Ugandan organic agriculture, one certified farm at a time.
